Mental Performance for Competitive Gymnasts
Composure. Confidence. Trust in your training.
Bring Your Training into Competition
I help competitive gymnasts develop practical mental skills for the moments when pressure, doubt or fear gets in the way. We focus on how you prepare, respond and move forward, one routine at a time.
What I Help With
Competition anxiety
Build a repeatable pre-meet routine, settle racing thoughts and bring your attention back to the next skill, even when the score matters.
Confidence
Develop confidence grounded in preparation and controllable actions. Learn to reset after a fall, a difficult meet or a stretch when progress feels slow.
Fear & mental blocks
Understand what happens when a familiar skill suddenly feels difficult to start. Work on the mental side of rebuilding trust at a pace that respects your readiness, alongside your gymnastics coach.
Perfectionism
Keep high standards without turning every correction into self-criticism. Practice responding to mistakes with a clear next step instead of carrying them into the next event.
Returning after injury
Address hesitation, frustration and fear of reinjury as you return to training. Mental performance work supports the return plan established by your medical team and coach.
Who This Is For
Competitive club, high school and collegiate gymnasts who want a more consistent mental approach to training and meets. Parents are welcome to inquire about support for a young gymnast.
A Personal Connection to Gymnastics
I am Mark DeNoble, PhD, LPC, a Licensed Professional Counselor based in Charlottesville, Virginia and author of Mental Wellness for Athletes. I started gymnastics at age four and competed until I was 21. The sport took me to James Madison University on an athletic scholarship, where I developed a firsthand understanding of the dedication, pressure, setbacks, and satisfaction that come with competitive gymnastics. I know what it feels like to train for countless hours, manage nerves, and work toward delivering your best performance when it matters.
I take a direct, engaged approach: we identify what is happening now, understand the patterns maintaining the problem and build a practical plan you can use in the gym. Our initial conversation helps clarify whether your goals call for mental performance support, psychotherapy or coordination with another professional. The work is tailored to you and your stage of development.
